A federal judge is ordering the release of Columbia University pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil.

U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz indicated that he will issue an order requiring that Khalil be released today. He denied a motion by the government to stay the ruling for seven days.

The judge asked the parties to consult with a magistrate judge about any conditions that will be attached to Khalil’s release on bail.

See. We live in a perfectly free nation where you can only be illegally detained for protected speech for 3 months before a judge says you can go home but still have to report for trial.

Don’t forget how free you are to have your entire personal and professional life upended on false charges while waiting in a gulag on the other side of the equator (not necessarily the case with Khalil re: CECOT but even so). God, freedom tastes so good!

Just hope you don’t have children or other dependents you’re supporting in those 3 months you can’t work. Or have to pay rent.

So he’s actually being released, right?

And all the other people abducted without a trial?

Khalil told reporters he was looking forward to returning home to spend time with his infant son, who was born while his father was detained. “I can actually hug him,” Khalil said.

While the conditions that led to him missing his son’s birth were absolutely cruel and unnecessary, I am glad the family is reunited. A better outcome than for may, unfortunately
